Do I Need to Fast Before a CT Scan?

Step 1: Arriving at Exact Check
When you arrive, our team will confirm your identity, doctor's request, and the CT examination that has been prescribed.

Step 2: Preparing for the CT Scan

You may also be asked to change into a gown.
The radiologic technologist will explain how you should position yourself and what will happen during the scan.
Step 3: Getting Positioned on the CT Scanner
You will lie on a motorized examination table that moves through the opening of the CT scanner.
A CT scanner looks like a large ring or doughnut rather than a long enclosed tunnel. The part of your body being examined passes through the opening as images are acquired.
You will need to remain as still as possible while the images are being taken.
For certain examinations, the technologist may also ask you to hold your breath for several seconds. This helps reduce movement that can affect image quality.
The technologist will be able to see and communicate with you during the examination.
Step 4: What Happens If My CT Scan Requires Contrast?
Some CT examinations use contrast material to make certain blood vessels, organs and tissues easier to distinguish on the images.
Contrast may be administered in different ways depending on the examination. For some CT scans, an intravenous (IV) contrast agent is used.
If IV contrast is required, the imaging team will explain the procedure before it is administered.
Some patients experience temporary sensations during IV contrast administration, such as warmth or a metallic taste. These sensations usually pass quickly.
Tell the technologist immediately if you feel unwell or experience any unexpected symptoms.

How Long Does a CT Scan Take?
The actual image acquisition is often relatively quick, but your total appointment will take longer than the scan itself.

- Reviewing the images before you leave
